Canada's New Passport
A 200 year old Austrian passport-maker, Oesterreichische Staatsdruckerel Holding AG (OeSD) ,says it has developed an app that can handle all kinds of personal data, completely replacing physical ID documents.
Their “My Identity App,” requires two devices - one for the user, the other for the person checking the identity and a central register for citizen data. Data is pulled from the cloud and the users can limit what info certain people see..
So far no countries are close to becoming customers, but other trials show some places are headed in that direction. Iowa recently let employees of the Department of Transportation use driver’s licenses on smartphones. And, Airside Mobile, has partnered with U.S. customs, with an app that lets pre-authorized U.S. and Canadian citizens a quickly pass immigration at certain airports.
US State DMV's have given OeSD positive feedback but no commitement . OeSD have shown countries like Estonia the app, because they don't require its citizens to carry a physical ID since police can pull up info online about people from their cars
