Avelo, one of the 'Class of 2021' startup airlines, is taking its first overseas steps with flights planned to Montego Bay, Jamaica and Cancun, Mexico, both served from its newest U.S. hub, Hartford's Bradley International Airport.
Bradley, which draws travelers from western Massachusetts as well as central Connecticut, will also see service to Concord and Wilmington in North Carolina and to Lakeland, Florida. Concord is an alternate airport for Charlotte, while Lakeland is between Tampa and Orlando, also served by Avelo.
Bradley is less than an hour away from New Haven's Tweed Airport, which is one of Avelo's major hubs and crew bases; Avelo says the two will act a a "regional base" for the airline.
Lakeland is adding seven new routes in addition to Hartford: Atlanta, San Juan and Wilmington, Delaware. At both the Delaware and Florida ends of that route, Avelo is the only commercial carrier serving the airport. Avelo is, for curiosity collectors, also the only U.S. commercial carrier serving airports at two different Wilmingtons.
Over its first three years, Avelo has developed a West Coast network and an East Coast network, altogether serving over 50 cities, but the two networks only meet at Brownsville, Texas, where two flights a week connect Brownsville with Orlando and two a week go to Burbank, California.
