Barcelona declares itself 'veggie friendly'

Barcelona, one of the world's great food and market cities, is signing on to promote more vegetables. The city announced Tuesday that it will be "veg-friendly, friend of vegan and vegetarian culture."

Concrete steps include, as the sign above indicate, publication of a vegetarian cookbook, creation of a space for promotion of vegan and vegetarian lifestyles and products, and official support for the multi-national Meat Free Mondays campaign started by Paul McCartney.

The proposal was supported by the five parties of the left coalition governing Barcelona; the two non-coalition parties abstained so it could pass.
