Bari, on Italy’s Adriatic coast, is looking to ideas from other coastal cities as it prepares to move cars and industry back from the shore and open it up more to pedestrians, cyclists and even to residential areas.
The series of 8 projects, which include narrowing and relocating roads, creating seaside walkways and an electric tram to provide access, are to be funded from a pool of €230 already put aside for regional development. Much of the work will be completed within about two years.
Copenhagen is one of Bari’s models; the Danish city has extensive bike lanes (36% of the population are bicycle commuters), pedestrianized streets and waterfront areas with outdoor seating, museums and restaurants. Bari is also looking to Barcelona’s model of a seaside promenade.
