"Black Saturday" to jam French roads

If you're planning to to leave tonight on a vacation road trip in France (don't you wish you were!), tonight and tomorrow may not be your best days, because they are the first day of the traditional French August vacation break. Traffic authorities are suggesting you wait a day or two.

Bison-fute, the official traffic guide for France, is predicting that this "Black Saturday" effect will leave the roads all over France under heavy traffic, with the heaviest coming somewhere between this afternoon and Saturday night, with backed-up traffic reaching an unbelievable 900 kilometers in some places.

Cyrille Leblic, spokesman for CNIR, the national road information center, said the day has been given the designation "black." That category means that all main roads and highways will have at least 700 kilometers of tie-ups. But, he pointed out, there are surprisingly few accidents during this period...perhaps because no one is going fast enough to do damage!
