Bourton-on-the-Water, England

Most would agree that the Cotswolds are one of the most beautiful regions in England.  Besides the lovely rolling hills, there are a number of pretty and interesting towns worth visiting.  One of these is Bourton-on-the-Water.

Our main purpose in visiting Bourton-on-the-Water was to see the Cotswold Motoring Museum and Toy Collection, which we’ve previously discussed on this website in Part 1 and Part 2.   After we spent a few hours at this fun museum, we explored the village.

Bourton-on-the-Water is pretty, with River Windrush flowing through the heart of it. The river is spring-fed and begins about 10 miles from town .  The photo shown below provided last weekend’s One Clue mystery photo.  Congratulations to the incomparable George G, who recognized the spot!

While it’s not a particularly large river, there are several small arched bridges which cross it, most made for pedestrians, some about 400 years old.  This gave rise to one of its nicknames, the “Venice of England”.

There are several small shops and cafes in the village center.  And nice streets on which to wander, with historic shops and homes.   The village center is a National Conservation Area.

The surrounding hills have many hiking paths and are very inviting.  I hope to return sometime soon and explore them.

A seemingly quaint and quiet village to end the day with a pint in the pub.

Westward Reflections

Sometimes the fishing ain’t that great, but you still get quite a reward. On a calm evening, with only a few bites, I watched as the sunset turned incredible before my eyes. The smooth lake created a perfect reflection of the sky above.
