Cafe limit proposal stirs Copenhagen

A proposal to limit hours for sidewalk cafes, bars and restaurants has drawn a flood of responses from Copenhagen residents asked for their opinion on the city’s website.

The proposal, favored by a narrow majority of the city government, would set a closing limit for outdoor service at 10 pm weekdays, with some exceptions for the city center. The proposal stems from complaints about noise and disturbance in residential areas.

Under local law, citizens are asked to weigh in on the government website as a kind of open hearing before a final decision is made. The cafe proposal got 1500 responses, nearly 40 times the number received for the next most popular topic, extension of the M5 Metro line.

No details have been released on how many of the responses support the closing time proposal. They will all be submitted to the council committee that will develop a finalized version of the proposal.
