Calais is a wonderful small border city in Maine. Its Residential Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. It has some very beautiful and well-kept-up homes from the 1800's. The District is located on Maine and Calais Streets.
The District is mainly residential, but does have a church and a former 19th century hotel. What's interesting to me is that all the houses, except for two are frame construction. The city's commercial buildings are mainly brick because of the 1870 fire.
