Canada is joining the parade to vaccine passports—digital health certificates—that Europe and many other major countries are issuing to simplify travel and other Covid-related health issues, leaving the U.S. conspicuously behind.
Canada's Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced the plan Wednesday, saying that details are still being worked out: “We are working actively with the provinces and territories on a secure, pan-Canadian proof of vaccination for international travel.”
The system, which will be ready "early this fall" will be open to temporary and permanent Canadian residents and will include the holder’s COVID-19 vaccination history, the date they got it, the type of jab they received and the location where they received their shot. The data will be collected from the provincial systems.
The EU has adopted a common digital certificate that works across its 27 member nations as well as coordinating with the UK and several non-EU European nations. With more countries, France and Italy now included, demanding proof of vaccination or test status for entry into restaurants, trains, theaters and more, such a passport is even more critical.
