Bathurst Island, at center of this NASA satellite photo, is new park site
Canada’s Environment Minister, Leona Aglukkaq, announced a new bill last week, taking the first step to establishing Canada’s 45th National Park in Canada’s Arctic territory of Nunavut.
The park, to be called Qausdulttuk, will be on northern Bathurst Island, and is intended to protect the area’s natural and cultural heritage, including the endangered Peary caribou. It will be strictly for the adventurous tourist willing to travel to one of the most remote corners of the world.
The plan also requires coordination with native Inuit communities and organizations in the area; the government says they will benefit from opportunities created by the park. The park’s headquarters and visitor center will be located in the town of Resolute, the nearest community. Parks Canada has more information HERE
I like the idea of trying to keep some of this ecosystem prestine. But I suspect it will be the least visited national park in the world. And maybe that’s for the best,
