Cape Meares on the Oregon Coast

Earlier this year my husband and I were able to spend a month in Oregon exploring their beautiful coast. One of the favorite places we visited on a previous trip was a little area near Tillamook where we were able to see the Cape Meares Lighthouse. So while in the area last May, we made sure to make another visit.

For those that are not familiar with Cape Meares, when it was first lit on Jan. 1, 1890, the first order Fresnel lens was one of the most powerful and largest of its day. Mariners could spot the distinctive red-and-white flashes from more than 21 miles away. Also, there is a paved 0.2-mile path which leads from the main parking area to the lighthouse, passing many viewpoints and interpretive panels along the way. There are some AMAZING views.

The Oregon Coast is one of my favorite places in the US. I’m more familiar with the coast between Newport and Florence, with its amazing dunes of sand and clear lakes. On a clear day (which isn’t too frequent up there) when the flowers are blooming it reminds one of the Northern Spanish coast. Thanks for the tip!
