Carnival Cruise Line, the biggest cruise ship operator, is going big on ship size for its next order, announcing three new 8,000-passenger ships to be delivered over the next few years.
Not only will they be Carnival's largest ships, they will only be smaller than the three most recent behemoths from Royal Caribbean. The new ships will be 25% bigger than Carnival's current biggest ship, and will have 3,000 cabins each. The current record for most passengers is 7,600 and for most cabins is 2,867, both on Royal Caribbean ships.
Carnival has added five ships in the past two years, and has two others on order. Features for the new ships haven't been announced, but in recent years each new Carnival ship has come with spectacular features such as roller coasters.
Ironically, current record-holder Royal Caribbean has recently indicated it's interested in building smaller ships that can serve ports that can't accommodate the super-ships.
