Church of the Ascension, Therma, Ikaria

The owner of the guesthouse where we stayed urged us to go to see this little church. It is situated on a pleasant coastal walk from Therma to Agios Kirykos, Ikaria’s capital.

When we got there, a lady was just arranging a flower display for the altar. She also made sure that the two silly tourists were not inadvertently letting one of the cats lurking outside into the church. (I think it might have happened at some time in the past—and I can see why it might not be a good idea to have a cat locked in there).

Below are two photos from inside the church.

I particularly liked the colourful windows in the dome. Not exactly stained glass masterpieces, but they created a nice effect.

The golden cross above the entrance also deserved a photo.

From just outside the church you get good views of the islands of Fourni, some ten kilometres across the blue waters of the Aegean.

I mentioned the guesthouse where we were staying. It was a friendly, very welcoming place and I do not mind giving them a little plug here. Their website is: https://plumeriaikaria.gr/
