A dozen years after it was closed by a landslide, the Via dell’Amore—said to be one of the world’s most romantic walks—has reopened, linking Italy’s Cinque Terre villages of Riomaggiore and Mnarola.
Residents were allowed on the nearly one-kilometer path last week, and visitors will be allowed starting this Friday. Visitors will pay a €5 fee that includes admission to Riomaggiore Castle. Access will be limited to 400 per hour.
The path, originally built in the 1920s as an access path for railroad workers working nearby, suffered a partial collapse in 2012, injuring four Austrian hikers.
The rebuilding project, costing €23 million, involved fixing boulders to walls with steel mesh and 20-metre-long nails and building two rockfall tunnels at the ends. At some points, a helicopter was needed to bring materials to the site.
