In a day when cruise ships are bigger and bigger and feature more and more outdoor activities on deck, Ponant, a French expedition cruise line, is going in the opposite direction, with a bar way below deck featuring wall-to-wall views of sea life through giant windows built into the hull.
Each of the line's four new ships, the first due in 2018, will have the feature. Ponant specializes in small-ship expeditions to diverse destinations, including some not accessible to large cruisers. The new ships are just over 420-feet and have cabins for 184 guests.
Among the planned destinations, the company lists the Great Lakes, Great Barrier Reef, Panama Canal, and the Amazon as well as some more usual routes. The ships will all be certified for sailing in polar regions.
