Cruise ships plug in at Miami port

'Shore Power' has gone live at the world's busiest cruise port, PortMiami, with Carnival's Conquest the first ship to plug in at the first U.S. Atlantic port to be fully capable.

Shore power connections enable cruise ships to operate in port while shutting down their engines and onboard generators, which are a much less-efficient way to power a docked ship. It's a big push in the industry to reduce the carbon footprint of cruising.

Carnival has been ramping up its ships' ability to use shore power, with two-thirds of its ships capable of running on shore power, and several more scheduled to get the equipment within the next year or so. It now has more shore power capability than there are ports that can provide it.
