Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a castle town that was very strong in the Byzantine times. It was the second most important town after Constantinople at the end of the period.

It was here in 1448 the last emperor of Byzantium, Constantine XI Palaeologos, was crowned, shortly before Constantinople was captured by Turks.
