December 12, 2019: A Newborn Fawn, Thunder Bay

While driving around Thunder Bay with my brother and father this past summer, we came across this doe and her freshly born fawn.  The fawn was still wet with amniotic fluid and was just learning to stand.

The doe stayed with her fawn for a few minutes, it growing progressively stronger and more steady, before wandering off leaving the fawn to fend for itself.  I’m not sure why she left –possibly an attempt to divert attention from the fawn to her, but no one was in any way crowding or threatening them.

The fawn was lead away from traffic by this gentlemen, who guided it into the trees beside the road.
