Disney: Last call for fading favorites

Disney has big expansion plans for its theme parks, including new lands and new features in others—and to make room for some of the new, Disney will be clearing out some of the old.

The new features focus on recent popularity of Disney-owned franchises including Cars and Monsters Inc. The spaces being made for them will see the end of more traditional features such as the Liberty Square Riverboat and Mark Twain Island. Also on the block: Rivers of America and Dinoland.

The riverboat and Mark Twain space will be "transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race with some of the world's most iconic racers," the company said. "We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver's seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland."

But Disney isn't underestimating the feelings of its nostalgic guests. They're announcing the plans now although construction isn't set to start until next year so "guests will have plenty of time to experience the charm and nostalgia of Frontierland as it is today."

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
