Don't just visit France, own a (tiny) piece!

The tiny village of Berrien, in Finisterre, in northwestern France, has a population problem: not enough of it, not even enough to justify a school for the children.

But the mayor of the 987-resident village has a plan to attract new residents:He's announced the sale of ten plots of land, about 800 square meters each, at 1€ per square meter. At 800€ for a house lot, that's a lot cheaper than the average monthly rent of an apartment in Paris.

The plan has generates as much as 50 calls per hour, including from the Philippines, the U.S. and Mexico. About 30 of the 300 official applications are being taken seriously.

The Mayor, Paul Quemener, says it's even a good spot for those who don't speak French, as there are quite a few British ex-pats living in the area, including a British councillor in the village.
