United Airlines announced it was going to void mistake fares that several thousand people were able to buy on United Airlines Denmark's website for as little as $51 for overseas first-class tickets.
The US Department of Transportation is now looking into whether United is or is not required to honor the mistaken fares. Recent consumer protection rules by the DOT require airlines to honor all sales, including mistake fares. In this case, consumers had to mark Denmark as their home country to take advantage of the offer, so it's not clear what the DOT will decide if passengers misstated their status.
