Dublin Airport tests honor system for snacks

Dublin Airport is about to extend an honor-system trial that trusts travelers to take what they need and pay for it, without waiting in long cashier lines.

The airport already has a successful bottled-water system in place which allows travelers to grab a bottle of water and drop a Euro into the cashbox; there will now be a refrigerator case stocked with sandwiches, pastries and other items on a trial basis. Airport officials say 92% of the water customers have paid the  full price, with only a few leaving nothing or less than a Euro.

The new fridge will be a bit more complicated, since prices are not all the same and some may be beyond the range of pocket change. Payment will be by contactless cash card or by phone payment apps on the way out of the  store area.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
