I knew I would visit a botanical garden and a mansion, but I was surprised by another heritage stop at the Dunedin Railway Station while of a Royal Princess excursion. This New Zealand gem is one of the city’s most prominent architectural landmarks.
It is said to be the most photographed building in the country and second only to Sydney Opera House in the Southern Hemisphere.
The 1906 masterpiece is offers a Flemish Renaissance-style edifice featuring white Oamaru limestone facings on black basalt rock, characteristic of the ‘Gingerbread House’ appearance.
The tour guide and driver let us loose after telling us to make sure to see the mosaic floor of almost 750,000 Royal Doulton porcelain tiles in the booking hall and a stained-glass window on the second floor.
