Dutch cops test blue-light bikes

Police in six Dutch cities are experimenting with greater visibility for bike-mounted cops by installing blue-light flashers on their two-wheelers. If the idea is a success, it will go national.

Nick Schuermans, the police cyclist who came up with the idea explained it to Dutch reporters: "Police cyclists are not always easily seen. On the one hand, that is to our advantage if we don’t want to be noticed during surveillance, but on the other, there are situations when you really want to be visible."

Officers will use the lights at traffic accident scenes, or to deal with speeders, but unlike the blue lights on police cars they will not allow officers to ignore traffic lights at intersections.
