Rail traffic is booming in the Netherlands, with estimates of 30 to 40% more passengers by 2030, driving a need for new and upgraded stations along the way.
ProRail, the state-owned company that operates the tracks and stations, is planning to invest €3.5 billion in new stations and upgrades to existing stations, with the funding coming from national and local governments and from the train operating companies.
First steps will be upgrading regional stations that handle over a million passengers a day, with improved waiting spaces and toilet facilities. NS, the main passenger train operator, had already committed funds to start this work at up to 200 stations.
The ProRail project will also include creating 20 to 30 new stations to account for areas where new development has brought more residents.
