In a previous episode of Travel Gumbo, I did a detailed story of Edgar Allan Poe’s life and the Poe Museum in Richmond.
Poe enrolled at the University of Virginia in February 1826 at the age of 17. Although he was the top student in his Ancient and Modern Languages curriculum, Poe had to withdraw from the University when he could not continue paying tuition because of the massive gambling debts he had racked up. So, he enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army when he was 18 but lied about his age saying he was 22.
UVA, located in Charlottesville, has immortalized Poe’s dormitory room which is where I marked it with a Yellow X on the Google Map. The Room Number is 13 and protected by a glass door for viewing, but there are many smears and reflections making photography somewhat difficult.
The room can also be identified with the green shutters, where all other rooms have black shutters. The room is available for viewing most all times of the year and free of charge. There is a doorbell button that will give you some narrative when you push it.
A warning about parking however. Almost all parking spaces in and around UVA are reserved with towing enforced.The UVA Hospital parking garage with paid parking is somewhat close.
