Eiffel Tower: Threats, Sleepers and Jumper

The Eiffel Tower had an exciting time last week, with bomb threats, drunken overnight guests and a daredevil who climbed the tower and then parachuted off it.

It started over the previous weekend, when the tower was temporarily evacuated after bomb threats were received. No bomb was found, and police advised against evacuation for several more threats over the next few days.

Then, on Tuesday morning, tower security workers found two apparently drunk Americans sleeping in a non-public area between the second and third levels of the tower. The sleepers had entered the tower with tickets the night before and apparently chosen their beds on the way down. Tower officials filed a criminal complaint against them.

The jumper, a 24-year-old who has not yet been publicly identified, was arrested Thursday morning after parachuting into a nearby stadium. Security officials spotted him when he began his climb around 5:40 am, but were unable to talk him down as he climbed to the 330-metre level, or to stop him from jumping.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
