Situated in the heart of the ancient Sicilian city of Catania is Piazza del Duomo, a lovely Baroque square which includes City Hall and the City's Cathedral.
Located in the center of this square is an interesting fountain, Fontana dell ’Elefante, the Elephant Fountain. At its center is an elephant carved of basalt, which is thought to date to Roman times. The elephant is topped with an Egyptian obelisk more than two thousand years old, and rests on a marble fountain that was constructed in the 18th century. The fountain reminds me of Bernini's Minerva Elephant in Rome.
The fountain is nicely lite up at night, and photographs surprisingly well in the dark!
