FAA restores Mexico's aviation safety rating

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has restored Mexico's Category 1 safety qualification, downgraded in May 2021. The action opens new options for Mexico's airlines and for U.S. travelers to Mexico.

The downgrade to Category 2 on the International Aviation Safety Assessment meant that Mexican airlines could not start new routes to U.S. cities and that U.S. airlines could not sell codeshare tickets on Mexican carriers. The downgrade was based on a finding that the country’s airlines were routinely not meeting international aviation safety standards including some maintenance issues. U.S. and Mexican regulators have worked together to restore the rating.

Mexico is one of the most popular destinations for American travelers, especially since the end of pandemic restrictions. Mexico's airlines, including discount carriers, will now be able to add more flights and reach out to more U.S. cities to soak up some of the demand, perhaps resulting in some fare drops as competition increases.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
