Feb. 6, 2018: Mount Nebo, Jordan

Although scholars continue to debate whether Mount Nebo is the same mountain referred to in the Bible, a visit here is certainly a reminder of the rich and interesting history that can be found in Jordan. It is said this is the location where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land before his death.

Mount Nebo provides a spectacular view of the Holy Land as well as the Jordan River valley. The West Bank city of Jericho is usually visible along with Jerusalem on a very clear day.

In the visitors’ area, in addition to the views, is a monument commemorating the Biblical account of Moses and the serpent, and the excavated remains of a Byzantine church discovered in 1933. The church was constructed in the second half of the 4th century to commemorate the place of Moses’ death.

The church was enlarged in the late 5th century and rebuilt in 597. Six tombs were found hollowed from the natural rock beneath the mosaic-covered floor of the church. A modern church was built to protect the site. Remnants of the mosaic floors can be seen from elevated walkways.

Unfortunate for those visiting the site as a pilgrimage, the atmosphere is chaotic as people vie for position to take photos and chat loudly in the church. Knowing the history and significance of Mount Nebo ahead of time as well as understanding the frenzied environment often found here will help visitors appreciate more what they are seeing.

3-16

I visited Mount Nebo as part of Exodus Travels “Hidden Treasures of Jordan” tour.
