Monasteries of Meteora, Greece

One of the most amazing places in Greece is Meteora. The UNESCO World Heritage site features Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched on top of enormous rocks rising from the plains of Thessaly a few miles northwest of Kalambaka. Originally settled by monks living in caves during the eleventh century to escape invading Turks, the monks climbed higher and higher up the rock face until they were living on the inaccessible peaks where they were able to build by bringing material and people up with ladders and baskets. Today you can visit six monasteries, now accessible by roads, pathways and steps.

My visit to Meteora was part of Exodus Travels’ “Highlights of Ancient Greece” tour.
