Feds say LAX ‘jetpack man’ might be balloon

FAA and FBI officials who have been investigating pilot reports, two last year and one this, of what appeared to be a man with a jetpack passing close to airliners approaching Los Angeles International Airport are now considering that what the pilots saw may actually have been a balloon.

The new possibility is based on analysis of video footage taken by a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter in November 2020, as seen below.

The first reported sighting, in August 2020, was by an American Airlines pilot who reported what he described as “a guy in a jetpack” while landing. Another pilot made a similar report in October, and a third incident was reported this year, on July 28.

And no, the title image isn’t from these incidents; it’s from a promo for actual jetpacks in development.
