Flying this week? Check your Airline!

With more winter storms this week, thousands of flights are being canceled...and yours might be affected. The cancellations don't only affect areas that are snowed in, because airlines protect the network by not flying planes into areas where they might be marooned for a day or two before they can fly back.

The good news is that when weather like this comes up, airlines will waive most rules about cancellation, rescheduling and the like, although each one acts individually.

Here are some steps that can help you:

1. Take advantage of airline instant notifications. Go to the airline's website and make sure you've added the available text/e-mail/Twitter/phone alerts the airlines offer. It's often way ahead of the news media in letting you know what's happening and what you can do. If you're a member of their loyalty program, you can add them to your profile as well as to your upcoming reservation.

2. Follow online updates. One useful tool is USA Today's "Today in the Sky" blog, which updates frequently throughout the day.

3. Check your airline's website for current policy and information. As weather conditions develop, airlines may modify their policies and conditions. What isn't possible today, may be tomorrow!

4. If your schedule allows flexibility, rebook now. You'll get the best choice of seats and flights, before everyone else piles on.

Remember: Into everyone's life, some rain must fall—and sometimes it's frozen!

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
