France: End of the line for sleeper trains?

Unless another operator steps in at the last minute, the end is near for all but three of France's overnight sleeper train services. The government, which owns train operator SNCF, is ending subsidies, and if no operator steps forward by July 1, most service will come to an end.

There are presently a dozen overnight trains to and from Paris; only three will remain, defined as "socially necessary" routes to Briancon, Rodez and Latour de Carol. Over the past few years, overnight service between Paris and German cities has disappeared, along with services to Barcelona and Madrid.

Competition by low-cost airlines and high-speed day trains are often cited as reasons for the slump in sleeper business, but advocates of rail service also cite high 'track access' costs that must be paid to the operators of the infrastructure. Ironically, Britain is increasing and adding to its sleeper services.
