France and Germany have announced a plan to hand out 60,000 free rail tickets to young people of both nations in hopes that more visiting will build stronger ties between the two countries.
The plan, announced jointly by French and German transport ministers Clément Beaune and Volker Wissing, offered scant details, saying the distribution "will be made available free of charge, according to terms and conditions which will be specified shortly."
While no announcement about the age limits and how the drawing for the tickets will be organized, some speculated that the age-26 rule that applies to regular youth train passes would be used.
The two country's national rail operators, SNCF and Deutsche Bahn, will be financing the plan, which comes at the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, which started the process of building bilateral cooperation between the former adversaries.
