France, Germany in cross-border rail tix deal

Young travelers living in eastern France and western Germany are getting a special deal this month and next as their regional rail authorities agree to honor each other's all-you-can-ride discount tickets.

Germany's €49 a month Deutschlandticket is available to everyone, but passholders under age 28 and living in three German border states will be able to use the tickets on regional trains traveling as far west into France as Paris.

After August 11th, until the end of the month, the ticket will still be accepted in the Grand-Est region east of Paris. The three states are Saarland, Baden-Wurttemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.

For France, holders of the Pass Jeune, or youth pass, who live in Grand-Est will be able to use German regional and local rail into the three states. In both directions, the passes are not valid on high-speed TGV or ICE routes.

Earlier, German officials had proposed a broader cross-border deal with France, but discussions last spring fell through on a national basis, leading to the more limited regional deal.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
