Half the population of France, apparently, is confused by common road signs—perhaps because there have come to be so many—according to a recent survey.
And if it's that hard for the locals, imagine the effect on tourists, especially those who drive on what we and the French consider the "wrong side" of the road!
Prevention Routiere, the road safety group that organized the survey, reported that while 71% of those surveyed were sure they could pass a written test on signs, half turned out not able to correctly identify even common ones. PR says there are a total of 700 different signs on French roads, and the number is growing as rules change—but motorists are never retested on signs.
TheLocal.fr has a test you can try. I was sure I'd ace it; I got a 5.
