Now departing...and not returning. Frontier leaves Wilmington flightless.
Delaware is now the only U.S. state with no scheduled air service, as ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines pulled the plug on its last (and already seasonally-suspended) flights.
The departure, which was only announced in an e-mail from a company spokesperson, didn't affect any travelers directly, because Frontier's last flight out of New Castle/Wilmingon Airport flew in April. At that point, the Denver-based carrier was operating two routs from the airport.
The e-mail said that "Frontier has pulled out...because it wasn't a profitable operation. If market conditions change, we may look at it again in the future." Even before April, the situation had been fluctuating, with frequent service cuts and changes in offered destinations, which occasionally left travelers holding tickets to cities the airline no longer served from there.
For Wilmington-area travelers, Philadelphia, about 30 miles away, is now the nearest choice.
