Where Gumbo was (#422)
Congratulations go to George G for finding Gumbo in the Gaspesian British Heritage Village in New Richmond, Quebec.
The Village is on 40 acres and consists of over a dozen different buildings and a lighthouse. It is located on a piece of land called Duthie’s Point and was opened in 1989. There are forest trails and views of the Bay of Chaleurs. The land is not only significant to the first English settlers but also to the Mi’gmaq, French and Acadians.
The buildings brought to the Village are from 1780 to 1910 and meant to showcase the historical contributors of those who lived in the area. And the buildings have period artifacts inside.
One highlight is the Chaleur Bay Military Museum. The building is a former church and the museum remembers the contributions of Gaspesians in conflicts of the 20th century. It also shows the impact those conflicts had on the local communities.
Another interesting building is the General store which shows how a general store used to be.
Please check if the Village is open before you go. They have had trouble getting funding in recent years but well worth seeing if it's still open.
