Get Your Drink On at Hofbrauhaus—Munich, Germany

I am so happy to be able to share some posts of some of the exciting things we did while in the Munich area. One of the more enjoyable things we did was visit the Hofbrauhaus. We needed it after touring Dachaus earlier in the day. I can happily say a few beers definitely helped us get back in the holiday spirit.  🙂

Hofbrauhaus-InsideMunich’s famous Hofbrauhaus was founded in 1589 by the Duke of Bavaria, Wilhelm V. and is one of Munich’s oldest beer halls. It was founded as the brewery to the old Royal Residence, which at that time was situated just around the corner from where the beer hall stands today. Here is a link to their website with more info and history.

Hofbrauhaus-Pretzel1Around 1.3 million visitors enjoy the “most famous tavern in the world” every year and 17,000 hectoliters of beer are served in the “Schwemme” (“watering place”) and “Bräustüberl” (brewpub) annually. I am glad that we were one of them this year! We visited a couple of times while there to make sure we tried several of their many beers. The current beers produced include a Weißbier and Helles, Maibock, Dunkel and Oktoberfest lagers. They also served Radler which I tried once. It was pretty good too.

Hofbrauhaus-BeersThe logo of Hofbräu München is a promise and motivation at the same time. To brew a “crowned” beer, it takes both the decades-long experience in Bavarian brewing tradition and openness for new technologies, trends and urban drinking habits.

Hofbrauhaus-BandOne thing I enjoyed about visiting the Hofbrauhaus, besides the aforementioned beers, was the live music playing. It was awesome and I loved listening to them play. Of course, everyone went nuts when they played “Ein Prosit”. Below is a link to the song.

Like I said we visit a couple of times, but had the most fun with a group of guys there were visiting from Albania and stopped in to have dinner and a few beers. They were so fun and even poured beer into Gene’s empty glass when the band started playing Ein Porsit.  One of them was like, you can’t sing and drink to this song without beer. It was hilarious and very nice on their part.  Here is a picture of Gene and all of them. Thank you guys for a very fun evening 🙂

Hofbrauhaus - FriendsAs you can see from the picture earlier in this post, these beers are HUGE and heavy. I can’t image how those women carry 6 or 8 of them during Oktoberfest. One of these days I hope to make it back to Munich and experience it for myself. In the meantime, I will enjoy my memories.
