My wife and I traveled through Goldfield several years ago. We stopped for a short visit, which I wrote about in this blog post.
I found the town fascinating -- like stepping back in time a hundred years. Situated in the high desert of southwestern Nevada, it's hard to believe that Goldfield was once a thriving community with thousands of residents. At one time it was the largest community in Nevada. Most of its residents worked in the gold mines around the town, and almost all left when the mining fizzled out.
Our travels brought us back to Goldfield recently. My wife and I took a few hours and explored Goldfield in greater depth. It's not a particularly large place, but is spread out and has character, so we took our time.
We came across the old Bullfrog Goldfield Railroad Company's repair yard, complete with old rail cars and train parts.....
I was surprised by the size of the town's hearse barn. In fact, I can't remember seeing a hearse barn before....
There were several old service stations in town. I am especially fond of the Shell station....
Only a few hundred people live in Goldfield now. Most of the homes in town have been deserted and often are in a state of decay.
One has to wonder if there are any ghosts lingering in these places?
The town has a lot of rusty old vehicles and machinery parts....
Artifacts of the mining era are plentiful.
The photo of a ruined building and one of the old mines outside Goldfield (see below) was used in last weekend's One Clue Mystery. It was recognized by George G -- congratulations as always, George!
I'll close this post with a few of the more "modern" buildings in town -- many at least a century old.
