Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, May 10, 2014: Essaouira, Morocco

When you’re in Morocco and you see this much blue, you’re most likely in either Chefchaouen, in the northern Rif Mountains, or in Essaouira, on the Atlantic coast, west of Marrakech.  When it’s boats, it’s almost surely Essaouira.  After many years, and a number of trips here, one of my very favorite countries in the world, it doesn’t seem right to bypass this lovely town, so I don’t.

Every visit I combine time in Marrakech with some spent in Essaouira, about 2 hours away, by “grand taxi” or by bus.  There’s always a pit stop at about the half-way point, always at the same place where there’s a restaurant, a shop and a row of toilets.  Then on, through countryside famous for goats in argan trees and fields of crocus that produce saffron, eventually cresting the hill that hides the ocean until you’re almost there.  It’s always a thrill.

If this picture seems familiar it’s because no one can resist these blue boats.  So you’ll see a variation on this theme fairly regularly, in travel magazines and online.  I never tire of them.

I love the photo, PortMoresby!  The color and orderly haphazardness are pleasing to my eye.

Such a pretty jumble of blues! Interestingly the same shade of blue as the robes of the Tuareg tribe’s people from the desert regions of the south.
