Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, February 12, 2015: Desert Bighorn Sheep, Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada

One of the things I love best about traveling are those great unexpected moments that you will never forget, moments that make you say “Wow”!

Such was the case when my family and I recently traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada.  We decided to take a day trip to Valley of Fire State Park (which is about one hour northeast of Las Vegas).  We enjoyed a wonderful day of hiking and sightseeing.  As the sun was starting to set, we were wrapping up our day by  driving along the “Arch Rock” side road.  As we came around a corner, two beautiful bighorn sheep came running across the road right in front of us.  It was at this moment that everyone in our car said “Wow”!  Thankfully we were driving at a slow speed and managed to stop in time to avoid hitting these awesome animals.

The two bighorn sheep stopped to graze just a short distance from our car.  Occasionally they casually looked our way, and then continued to graze.  We sat and watched these handsome animals for many moments.  Unfortunately, our viewing was cut short for it started getting dark.  We were on a small narrow winding road in the middle of nowhere and felt it best to get back to the main highway before it got completely dark.

Seeing these two desert bighorn sheep was definitely my highlight of the day in Valley of Fire State Park.  It was that unexpected “wow” factor I enjoy so much when I travel.

This must have been a rare treat, Ottoman. It’s always interesting to see wildlife in their natural habitat
