Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Jan. 09, 2014: Roadside produce stand, Southern Sri Lanka

I enjoy Farmer’s Markets and stopping at small road-side produce stands and visit them whenever I can on my travels.  It’s here you’ll get the freshest, highest quality fruit and other food-types.

We were returning to Columbo from a visit to the beaches of Southern Sri Lanka.  Our driver, a practical man, asked it if would be okay for us to stop at some of these stands along the way.  Apparently, the price of produce here was less than half of what it would have been in Colombo, and he wanted to stock up before returning home.  Of course we didn’t mind, and he bought a lot for himself and his neighbors (possibly running a side business back home).  These photos were taken at one of these stops.

I can still taste that papaya.  Fresh, ripe, with lime juice over it — impossible to beat!  And if thirsty, a fresh glass of watermelon juice!

The best part of any journey is tasting the just picked fresh fruit !

When my daughter was living in Greece I would go up to the flat roof.

A Lemon Tree was overhanging and laden with fruit.

As large as an Orange. The Lemon skin had a glorious citrus perfume to it. Just scrape your thumbnail across it.

And the flavour was so sweet !

Unlike a store bought lemon that we call “winky”… hard to eat without closing one eye !

Oh yes – I love eating Lemons !

In Australia they have 22 types of Banana.

The tiny one’s on sale (above)  were called Ladies Fingers and were delicious.

Must go back and try the other 21 !!

Bananas give you a wonderful body aroma after you’ve eaten them !

Very attractive to passing Mosquito’s.

But no Mosquito’s in Liverpool !

Or anywhere else I’ve been in England.

British Troops in hot countries swear by this stuff. High in Vitamin B.

Gorgeous ! Yeast extract you spread thin on toast

Mozzies hate the smell of your skin after a few days of indulgence.

First time I’ve NEVER been bitten in Cuba !

The Aussies have everything that we have in the UK. Full of Brits. Mostly second generation.

Vegemite is just the same as Marmite.

A touch sweeter and now produced by the World Dominating KRAFT Co.

Kraft also bought out a few English Brands and shifted production to Spain and Holland.

Demolished the Factory with undue speed !

Don’t you just hate it when that happens !!

“When in Rome do as the Romans do”

Cicak. You don’t find toast  – you find bread !

Then you toast it on a Toasting fork by the fire !

Afghan bread has no firm crust and tastes similar to the Armenian lavash bread. It has a dense and rich taste.

St. Josaphat Basilica, Milwaukee

DrFumblefinger visits the beautiful St. Josaphat Basilica in Milwaukee’s South Side. The church was built by and for Polish immigrants in the late 19th century and reflects the loving care incorporated by the hands who constructed and care for it.
