Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, July 28, 2015: Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park

Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces is one of the most recognized landmarks of Yellowstone National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The terraces are characterized by step-like rocks over which steaming hot water flows.  This hot water, heated deep within the earth, is what developed the terraces by depositing limestone; it still deposits minerals and sustains the colorful microorganisms growing there.   The results are simply beautiful.

Terrace features can change quite quickly, depending on on the degree of water flowing.  Sometimes the terraces all but dry up; at other times, like when I visited….well see for yourself!
