Taxis are an essential for any city, regardless of location or size, and they come in many different forms depending where in the world you are.
At the heart of Dubai‘s old city lies Al Khor (The Creek), a wide saltwater inlet which divides the two main city centre districts of Bur Dubai and Deira and provides a scenic thoroughfare with magnificent views of the city. One of the main forms of transport across this stretch of water is by Abra (water taxi). These are used mainly by locals crossing the creek to work and home.
Many passengers are these itinerant workers from India, the Middle East and Africa who are usually employed in construction projects on Dubai’s ever growing skyline. Some of these guys were a little camera shy but their individual expressions all told a story and I found them to be very colourful in their own way.
It’s a great image, Islandman! I really enjoy photos of people going about their every day lives in different locations about the world, a reminder to me how much more alike we all are than different. This photo is made more interesting by their obviously ethnic diversity — people who have come to Dubai for a good job and to improve their lot in life. The contrast of the old wooden taxi and modern skyscrapers in the background is great!
