Summer or winter, onion soup has its appeal. A rich broth, the onions, the crusty bread, the melted cheese—what more could you want? This one’s at Paris’s iconic Au Pied de Cochon, which started its life as part of the market life of Les Halles, the central markets, that were located a stone’s throw away. In 1947. it became the first Paris restaurant to open 24/7/365, and hasn’t closed since.
Besides the onion soup, the restaurant is known for pig trotters (that’s the pied de cochon of the name) and towering platters of seafood of all sorts.
I think I’d have to take a knife and fork to that soup !

It was delicious. It’s what I go there for, while my wife eats platters of shellfish. The broth is rich and sweet with caramelized onion, the cheese is excellent…and yes, it’s not just spoonfood! And, as you suggest, soup of that kind IS a meal, not an appetizer! I had a salad with it, but no main.
