Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Sept. 20, 2013: Luxembourg, Old City and Ramparts

013 September 20, 2013 Luxembourg 2013 032

One of Europe’s smallest countries, it’s easy not to visit Luxembourg, neatly tucked in between the cultural and economic giants of Europe — France and Germany — and just west of its political capital in Belgium.  But its a beautiful country and we really enjoyed our visit to the Grand Duchy.

Luxembourg City has an extensive and well preserved historic city core and an impressive rim of fortified walls.  It’s because of these features that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The small country is a relative tax haven so its got a strong economy, especially by European standards.  It’s got a lively cafe scene and it’s very pleasant and interesting to explore it on foot.
