Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, September 28, 2015: Maroon Bells, Colorado

 Maroon Bells, Colorado

These beautiful mountains, part of the Colorado Rockies, are the Maroon Bells which are located in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, near Aspen.  They’re among the most photographed peaks in Colorado — and among the most spectacular mountains anywhere.

The Bells are about a half hour drive from Aspen up Maroon Creek Road.  There’s a $10 per vehicle fee to enter, but a low cost bus option is available from Aspen.  If you want to have a picnic or go for a hike near Aspen, this is a great spot for it.  This time of year the Aspens are likely in their prime and the fall colors are beautiful, as they were when we visited several years ago.

In the winter the road to the Maroon Bells is closed so you’ll need to snowshoe, cross country ski or take a snow mobile tour to reach them.
