After a number of visits to Morocco the place I’ve enjoyed most right from the beginning is Essaouira, a fishing community on the Atlantic also known for its reliable wind that brings in wind surfers.
The blue boats tied to each other in the harbor are a popular subject for photographers. Fishing boats unload their catch which can be bought at the halle aux poissons or cooked for you at several stands adjacent to the port.
Traditional outdoor garb for women in the region is an off-white wrap of cotton or cotton and wool, covering them from head to foot, often accompanied by a mask leaving only the eyes visible. Both the wrap, resembling a large tablecloth, and the face coverings in a variety of styles and fabrics, can be bought in the market.
The best place in town to hang out with a coffee or have a meal, indoors or out, and watch the world go by is Place Moulay Hassan. Before the internet took over, Jack’s, above, was the place to find an apartment to rent or call home or just buy your International Herald Tribune and sit right where I’m sitting with another café crème.

We were only there for 1 night, yet we loved it. A wonderful place, I was glad to have squeezed out at least the 1 night, though could’ve easily stayed longer.
And the shopping is wonderful in #Essaouira!
